Elysian appreciates its volunteers!

Elysian's success as a community is based largely on its culture of volunteerism. The evening of September 18 was set aside to celebrate one of Elysian's greatest assets - its people.

The volunteer appreciation event recognizes individuals who gave of their time over the year in support of the 4th of July celebration, local charitable organizations, and improvements in the community.

Each year, Mayor Mack Evans highlights area people and their accomplishments.

"If you look around this room, everyone here does something to make Elysian better. That's what ties this community together and makes it a great place to live," said Evans.

Evans awarded his annual Mayor's Medals in front of a standing-room-only audience at the American Legion Club Room.

This year's recipients include:

Audene Greenwald, Elysian, for her volunteer work with Lake Area Women, hard work and dedication to the community, and her business endeavors that bring many visitors to Elysian.

Father Syl Brown, well-known resident of Elysian, for the hours he gives to the community and his positive attitude and actions that inspire others to do the same.

Al Peterson, a resident of Madison Lake and manager at Mankato Wal-Mart, for his support of Elysian projects through matching grants from his employer and volunteering at Legion events.

Earle Taylor, longtime Elysian resident, for service to his country during World War II and dedication to veterans in the area along with his consistent work that has benefitted the Methodist Church over the years.

Milan Behr, Elysian, for his volunteerism in the community. Behr was recognized for the many hours he devotes to events throughout the year and his service to area youth during his career as a WEM teacher.

Members of the Elysian Area Chamber of Commerce recognized Evans and his wife, Jan, for their years of leadership and service to the community. Read the story here.
